The
islands of Fiji are in the South Pacific, west of the International Date
Line. There are more than 300 islands, with just over 100 being
inhabited. The population is about 775,000 people of two dominant cultures
- Fijian and Indian - and many other cultures. Fiji has been inhabited for
about 2,500 years with people originally from South East Asia. The first
Europeans settled in Fiji in the 1800's and it remained a
British colony until 1970.

Marist Sisters in Fiji today care for one another in community, work with youth, visit families, teach in
schools... wherever they can fulfil a need...in Mary's way
The first Marist Sisters arrived in Fiji in 1892 from England
and Ireland. For over 107 years the Sisters have lived and worked in
places where they can answer contemporary needs. Each of the places we
have been began with the establishing of a school or teaching in a school as
that must have been the most urgent need they were called to respond to. Social
work is now being carried out in some parishes too.

"..gratefully enriched by our diversity...
Our primary ministry is the witness of our lives so we are
ready to go forward in joyful hope learning from Mary how to spend our lives in
building the reign of God in Fiji. We are presently 31 active members and
are gratefully enriched by our diversity - Fijians, Indians, Chinese, Rabi
Islanders, Rotumans, Tongans and Europeans. We have a long tradition of accompanying,
helping and sharing in the pain of people who suffer. Our Pastoral
Planning has made provision for regular evaluation of peoples most urgent needs
and the effectiveness of our mission among them will be for us a priority.
