Marist Mission in Today's World

The mission of the Marist Sisters flows from their charism.

They  take Mary as their model.

They endeavour to think, judge, feel and act in a new way,

the way of Mary.

The Holy Spirit inspires them in this life-long process.

It involves a deep relationship with Mary as a living person

rather than emphasis on particular devotions to her.

Their mission is in living their faith in Jesus as Mary did

and seeking to have her attitudes towards people.

The mission of the Marist Sisters in the Church

is to help build a church as a community

in which Mary's merciful love is experienced -

a community characterized by compassion,

contemplation and relationship,

a community which welcomes all to Jesus Christ.

Toward the end of our General Chapter 2001,

we participated in a process of theological reflection on

our Marist Mission today.

We shared in groups our feelings and thoughts

on the events in the United States on 11th September 2001,

in the context of our charism.

We offer to all of you the statements made by the groups.

In the light of the events happening in  our world today,

we understand our Marist mission

to reflect the following:

bullet

to be like Mary at the foot of the Cross…

staying with the struggle in a non-judgemental way;

holding the fragile parts, the hurt and the pain

bullet

to be like Mary in the early church…

to support, to be with people,

a bridge between the suffering, death, loss and new life, new vision…

providing a safe place to allow the story to be told and midwife the emergence of reconciliation, new hope, a new stronger beginning

bullet

to be like the Good Shepherd…

to be touched and to respond in a compassionate, caring way…

to foster life wherever it is emerging…

to respect and accept difference…

to place our ‘good power’ and resources at the service of those in need…

to include all…

and all of creation
