From General Chapter 2001 - A Statement of Marist Mission We are called to bring the compassionate heart of Mary to our world
– gathering people together and giving expression to God’s all embracing love. We must share in their vulnerability and like them, live with our questions and our fears. We believe in the power of the spirit. We are called to be bridge-builders and to work for inclusivity, reconciliation, forgiveness and right relationships. The early Marists knew the social situation of their time. They saw the big picture and were big hearted in their response. This tragic incident challenges us to seek understanding and to work towards rectifying unjust structures and procedures. Personally each of us is challenged to integrate our Marist spirituality into who we are so that we can truly ‘touch’ others in our first response. This initial response often generates a lasting impression and we will never get a second chance to make a first impression. We are challenged to give expression to our Marist call to think, judge, feel and act as Mary in all our responses.
