From General Chapter 2001:

A Statement of Marist Mission

"Have courage – I have overcome the world."

Our mission is the Work of Mary and we believe it is relevant and concrete.

The world context, since the beginning, is essential to the understanding of our mission.

The Society of Mary was founded as a response to the modern world.

Mary’s presence was seen, from the start, as the answer to a world that was ill.

We need to understand our world and be active in our response,

being careful not to fall into the temptation of doing nothing

under the pretext of being "hidden and unknown" or "a presence of Mary".

We have to learn how to be small, but strong –

strong because we believe in the Resurrection and we desire to radiate hope.

We need to be bridge-builders, be compassionate and

courageously repeat Colin’s three 'no’s' -

no to greed, to prestige and to power -

in our way of life.
