Brazil

The Marist Sisters came to Brazil in January 1978, being  five Sisters from the Irish, Canadian and Australian Provinces.  Later, five more Sisters from the New Zealand and Italian Provinces joined the group.  Now only two Sisters from other Provinces continue in Brazil, the rest of the group being Brazilians.  At present the Marist Sisters are in five cities spread out over four states: Pernambuco, Rondonia, Minas Gerais, Santa Caterina. They are involved in pastoral work, especially in the formation and accompaniment of lay leaders, in education in state schools, pastoral work in a University and local schools, accompaniment of people diagnosed as HIV positive and work with a tribe of indigenous people.  The desire of the Sisters in Brazil is to be with the people in their struggle for justice, to promote relations that are inclusive, to foster human values and reach out to those excluded from society.

To be with people in their struggle for justice

Two Sisters live with these Zoro families and one visits
from time to time.  This village is in the Amazon region of Rondonia. The Sisters' house is on the right.  The well in the background was organised by one of the Sisters.

One of the Sisters made her Final Vows of Profession in her home parish of Juina in Mato Grosso.

One of the Sisters with a group of children at a little 'school' in Caruaru in the north.  The children are poor and receive a meal each day.  The Sisters also visit the families in this area.
